22 Dec Ski & Soak: A Match Made in Glenwood Springs
Glenwood Springs is a Colorado winter recreation and relaxation destination that makes the most of good times on the slopes and downtime in the thermal springs.
There are few places where two winter wonders occur together naturally—steep mountains covered in snow, perfect for skiing and riding; and thermal hot springs chock-full of minerals to aid in relaxation. The combination is a winning one that draws visitors to Glenwood Springs to ski at local resorts and soak at Iron Mountain Hot Springs.
Sunlight Mountain Resort
Spend the day skiing the hometown “hill,” just minutes from the hotel district in Glenwood Springs. Sunlight Mountain Resort boasts 72 trails, 720 acres of skiable terrain, and a 2,000-foot vertical drop. Sunlight gets approximately 250 inches of snow in a year and more than 300 days of sunshine, living up to its name! With a lodge that’s centrally located at the base, it’s easy to regroup for lunch or meet up at the end of the day. Sunlight Mountain is ideal for skiing families, with some of the most affordable lift tickets in the state. Friendly staffers make everyone from never-ever newbies to seasoned experts feel welcome. The slopes aren’t the only way to play at Sunlight though. The resort’s extensive trail system is popular for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and fat biking; and, snowmobiling tours are another option to get in on winter fun.
Aspen Mountains
When it comes to world-class skiing, Aspen ski resorts—Buttermilk, Highlands, Snowmass and Aspen Mountain—are just a 40-minute drive from Glenwood Springs. All four mountains offer unique skiing and riding opportunities. With ample beginning and intermediate terrain, Buttermilk is a great place for those new to the sport and building their skills and confidence. Fun fact, it’s also the location of the X-Games, held every year in January. Highlands is all about the steeps and spectacular views. An abundance of terrain makes Snowmass a favorite with all ability levels. Aspen Mountain (formerly Ajax) is situated in the heart of Aspen with elevated shopping and dining nearby. Combined, all four resorts offer 5,517 acres of terrain, eight parks and 336 trails served by 43 lifts!
Iron Mountain Hot Springs
When it comes to apres-ski, Iron Mountain Hot Springs is the singular choice to warm up after the slopes close. The natural outdoor setting located along a bank of the Colorado River tops off any day of winter recreation with the ultimate relaxation. Super-heated water that comes straight from the earth contains fourteen dissolved minerals that work together to soothe sore muscles. Choose from 16 soaking pools, each one a different size and temperature. Outside the “Quiet Zone” of the soaking pools, there’s a freshwater family pool that stays roughly 94˚F during the winter months, as well as an elevated jetted spa. Both are ideal spots for socializing with friends. The choices are also varied when it comes to adult beverages that often go hand-in-glove with apres-ski downtime. The Sopris Café offers everything from draft beer and wine by the glass to house-made cocktails, as well as canned beverage options and non-alcoholic drinks. Enjoy apres-ski but always imbibe responsibly, especially while soaking.
